It has been confirmed that all of your companions that you can form romantic relationships with are pansexual, meaning that no matter whether you’re a non-binary dwarf or a femme fatale Dragonborn, the people you meet will fall in love with you. He talks like I imagine a cat would talk to a mouse he somehow befriended.

But how does that relate to whether or not you can be gay in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Throughout your time in the world of Faerûn, players will encounter companions that they can travel with, as well as NPCs, that they will be able to form romantic and/or sexual relationships.

While this is strictly a different complaint/argument altogether, I include it here because the solution that is being proposed applies to both point: One counter-argument when it comes to companions is that you can simply reject them.

Besides, in some cases rejecting them requires picking uncomfortably rude dialogue options, which makes it feel like you the only way to avoid having gay sex is by being a horrible human being.

Solutions proposed by critics

Some solutions to this excess and unpleasant pushiness have been offered several times.

So far he never followed up on that, so I just regard him as a friend, he might be bi but in my play-through that was never more than a suggestion that he is bi. I want to thread carefully here, but let's for the sake of the argument accept that, theoretically, there can be a point where the proportion of LGBTQ NPCs is so unrealistically high that it suspends belief and makes the game less enjoyable.

He was disappointed, I did not feel like horrible person about it, we never talked about it again and we are still mates.

Astarion is a different story altogether. On PC and Steam Deck, at least. These are:

  • Astarion
  • Shadowheart
  • Lae’zel
  • Gale
  • Wyll
  • Karlach
  • Halsin
  • Minthara

Other companions that have been mentioned are Jaheira and Minsc, though neither of them are able to be romanced.

All in all, Larian Studios have created a character creator that is vast and inventive. The answer is a resounding ‘yes!’

The ‘Can You Be Gay’ guides are here to help you answer the most important question of all in video games.

So the argument goes something like this:

In the real world there is a very limited number of LGBT-people (some say only 5% of the population; this seems low to me, but for the sake of the argument I accept that it is 5%). But that was not my intention, so naturally I never picked that option. That does indeed sound pretty unlikely. With only a limited amount of time on your hands, you and your companions (who also have a tadpole in their heads) must venture further into the world to discover how to free yourself from the illithid’s influence.

Joining you will be other survivors of the attack who also have the brain worms: human wizard Gale, half-elf cleric Shadowheart, high elf vampire rogue Astarion, human warlock Wyll, and githyanki fighter Lae’zel.

While I still mostly disagree with them, I do appreciate the people who made the effort to present their arguments, remained civil in our disagreements and at least exhibited a willingness to hear each other out.

There is not much I can say to people who think there should not be any LGBTQ content in the game.

Picking that option would imply that I had been flirting with him. Like actual D&D, your choices will be constantly subject to the whim of a dice-roll, which is both terrifying and thrilling.

As a lifelong nerd and gamer, this series was always sort of hanging out in the periphery of the video game compartment in my mind, but last December I read a Reddit thread called WHY IS EVERYONE GAY IN BALDUR’S GATE 3, and I haven’t stopped being excited since then.

For example: Default (all bi), all straight, all same sex.

How much LGBTQ content is there?

While I have objections to this line of reasoning and also to the solutions offered, I won't go into that now. It did try in the second game, but ultimately it wasn’t what people were looking for. Essentially, all the characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 are “playersexual,” meaning that they will be attracted to the player, regardless of their gender or sexuality.
