Prevalence of sexual orientation across 28 nations and its association with gender equality, economic development, and individualism. Women demonstrate an erotic plasticity and are responsive to external influences such as social, cultural, and other contextual factors (similar to #2 but the erotic is biological).

Thus, it is somewhat difficult to determine the true size of the population of straight-identified women who are not totally straight.

Women are in touch with their emotions and bodily sensations such that they are sensitized to a range of erotic stimuli, regardless of biological sex or gender expression. For example, in the cross-national study noted earlier, just 66% of women reported being “predominantly not attracted to the same sex.” This group likely includes straight women and at least 24% (90% minus 66%) who have a slight degree of dual attraction but who reject a bisexual identity label as too same-sex oriented for them.

5. Is it emotional?

If so many women (and men) have some degree of same-sex attraction and behavior, what is with negative attitudes toward those who incorporate these facets into their identity?

Two studies were conducted. My best guess is that over 50% of the U.S. female population is totally straight, the largest sexual-orientation group among women. They get it. Is it accidental? Maybe the man of your dreams is more like a fairy godmother with abs. In addition to providing ratings of comfort at each stage of the scenario, the women also indicated the extent to which they would feel anxious about the man’s sexual intentions, as well as anxiety about not having anything in common with the man.

As the researchers had predicted, the results demonstrated that women anticipate being more comfortable interacting with gay men versus straight men, largely due to the removal of concerns related to the man’s sexual intentions.

👃 The Smell: Like Heaven in Human Form

Let’s be honest… gay men often smell amazing. Sex Roles, 61(11-12), 783-793. Women reported feeling more comfortable when they found out that their hypothetical male conversation partner was gay, rather than straight, and this association was explained by their reduced anxiety about the man’s sexual intentions.

To explore whether women’s responses related to hypothetical scenarios would play out during real-life interactions, the second study brought women into the lab to participate in one-on-one interactions with male strangers.

How many women are not totally straight?

Across all countries in which we have sufficient data on sexual orientation, straight-identified women are the second largest group—only slightly smaller than straight men in most national surveys.

Additionally, women’s actual behavior also shifted after learning that they were interacting with a gay man.
