By blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity, the film raises questions about the fluidity of identity and attraction.

A Strange Loop (2019)

We’re big fans of Michael R. Jackson here and his musical is so important – following a young gay artist at war with everything but mostly himself AND….in June 2022 it won the Tony for Best Musical!

Bare (2000)

This was recommended to us by Collabro’s Thomas J.

Redgrave – it’s an incredible coming of age drama set in a Catholic boarding school. Nikki Blonsky plays Tracy Turnblad next to another musical icon, Zac Efron, and the best bad gal ever, Michelle Pfeiffer. Egerton recorded the vocals for each song, thus making the musical biopic even more special for fans of the "Tiny Dancer" singer.

5 Bohemian Rhapsody

20th Century Studios

Possibly one of the most controversial rock ‘n roll biopics that puts the spotlight on a not-yet-famous Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek as the glorious Freddie as he grapples with making music, being bisexual, and his battle with drugs and AIDS/HIV.

THE PROM (2020)

Ryan Murphy’s THE PROM, adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, is a joyous and heartfelt celebration of inclusivity.

Of course, the film adaptation is just as iconic as the Broadway production. Sadly – as Tara sings wistfully about being under Willow’s spell – she actually was.

RENT (2005)

For the millennials among us, the 2005 screen adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s RENT was that guiding light for all of us outsiders and queer kids.

The problem she faces, however, is her size.
